Cost of hospitalization for ischaemic heart and cerebrovascular diseases in Belgium

Abstract Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability. According European Disease Statistics, in 2017 there were 108.7 million people living with CVDs Europe resulting about 4,681 disability-adjusted life years per 100,000 inhabitants. Among these, ischaemic heart cerebrovascular (IH&CBD) represent highest burden terms morbidity, health care costs. estimated cost EU €210 billion year, where 28% was attributable IH. The aim this study assess financial at societal level IH&CBD Belgium based on hospital discharge data, considering that inpatient costs accounted for 51% total healthcare CVDs. Methods identified ICD-10 codes following definition provided Global Burden 2017. IH: angina pectoris (AP) I20 I25, acute myocardial infarction (AMI) I21-I24; CBD I60-I68. Mean annual number patients direct hospitalization from 2016 2018 retrieved Belgian dataset, both primary secondary diagnoses. Results Within observed diseases, AP most common reason hospitalizations an average 41,439 hospitalized year. Yearly, 27,630 14,928 AMI. yearly AMI respectively €219,688,254 €133,343,881. CBDs largest €301,900,539 Conclusions In Belgium, almost 84,000 due IH&CBD; On average, spends around €655 year these hospitalizations. Key messages high Belgium. Since can be linked several behavioral risk factors, could reduced target interventions.
